How To Maintain A Positive Mindset When Dealing With Stress?

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “attitude is everything.” If you take this statement to heart and work on making positive changes in your attitude, then you will see positive changes in other areas of your life.

Studies show that people with a positive mindset are more successful than those with a negative one. People who stay positive achieve greater results and overcome setbacks faster than negative thinkers do.

To adopt a positive mindset, change the way you think about yourself and others by focusing on good things instead of bad ones. Practice gratitude every day.

How to Develop a Positive Mindset

Positive thinking is the key to success. It doesn’t matter if you are a teacher or an entrepreneur, or even a parent. If your mind is in the right place, you will achieve everything you want to achieve.

But positive thinking can be hard to achieve. Our brains are wired for negativity, and our negative thoughts run wild in our heads when we are stressed out about something. We tend to focus on problems rather than solutions because that’s what causes stress in our lives. So how do we turn our minds into positive machines? Here are some tips that can help:

Focus on the Good Things in Life

Challenges and obstacles are a part of life. If you’re faced with one, instead of focusing on the bad things, focus on the good things, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may be. You can always find a silver lining in every cloud — even if it’s not immediately obvious. For example, if someone cancels plans lay back relax and turn on Netflix.

Practice Gratitude Every Day

Practicing gratitude can reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and foster resilience in times of difficulty. Think of people, moments, or things that bring you some kind of comfort or happiness, and try to express your gratitude at least once a day. This can be thanking a co-worker for helping with a project, a loved one for washing the dishes, or even knowledging the effort that person put in.

“When we do this more in-depth, reflective, and specific-to-the-person kind of gratitude expression, the feelings tend to be much stronger.”

“We feel more warm, [and] the other person feels more recognized and validated. And that sense of bonding, of interdependence and mutual support, is more robust when we…deliberately highlight those elements.”

Keep a Grateful Journal

Studies have found that writing down the things you’re grateful for can improve your optimism and sense of well-being. One way to do this is by writing in a gratitude journal every day or jotting down a list of things you’re grateful for on days you’re having a hard time.

“This is just directing your attention to three or five things that happened that day, or parts of your life that you’re grateful for, and writing them down.”

Keep a Sense of Humor

Studies have shown that laughter reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and improves coping skills, moods, and self-esteem. It is always best to be open to humor in all situations; especially the difficult ones. Give yourself permission to laugh even if you are not feeling it or if you feel like it makes things seem more difficult. However, pretending or forcing yourself to augh can improve your mood and lower stress.

Surround Yourself with Positive People

It is proven that by spending time with positive people, you will be more open to new ideas and have a better attitude. Even if they are not directly influencing your thoughts, they are still influencing your moods.

You’re influenced by the people you spend time with. If you want to be positive and happy, spend more time with positive and happy people. The same can be said of negative and unhappy people — avoid them if you don’t want to end up like them.

Turn Negatives Into Positives

We tend to be our own worst critics, always thinking of the negative things we’ve done. We form opinions about ourselves that can be difficult to shake. To change your attitude, you will need to become more aware of the negative messages you are sending yourself and replace them with positive ones.

If you’re feeling stressed, it helps to talk to yourself in a positive way. Research shows that even a small shift in the way you talk to yourself can influence your ability to regulate your feelings, thoughts, and behavior under stress.

Improve Your Areas of Negativity

For each area you identified, ask yourself why that behavior is so ingrained in your psyche. For example, if you’re known to be a pessimist at work, think about what makes your job so negative and what might be causing it. Once you identify the cause of negativity in one area of life, it will be easier to tackle the next one and so on.

Every Morning Start with A Positive Attitude

You can start every day off on a positive note by creating a ritual. Here are some ideas:

  • Tell yourself that it’s going to be the best day ever and focus on the good things that might happen.
  • Start your day with a smile or do something nice for someone else.
  • Listen to upbeat music while you get ready in the morning.

Dealing with Stressors

Stress is a part of life, but it can also have a negative impact on your health. You may feel anxious or depressed, and you might even have trouble concentrating. Stress is a serious issue that many people face, but there are plenty of ways to cope with it.

A great stress reliever is Meditation – Try taking five minutes each day to sit in silence and focus on your breathing. This will help you stay calm throughout the day by clearing your mind of any racing thoughts. It’s a great way to start your morning.

I’ve never done it before. It’s an opportunity to learn something new.
It’s too complicated.I’ll tackle it from a different angle.
I don’t have the resources.Necessity is the mother of invention.
I’m too lazy to get this done.I wasn’t able to fit it into my schedule, but I can re-examine some priorities.
There’s no way it will work.I can try to make it work.
It’s too radical a change.Let’s take a chance.
No one bothers to communicate with me.I’ll see if I can open the channels of communication.
I’m not going to get any better at this.I’ll give it another try.

Conclusion

The biggest thing that will help you to maintain a positive mindset is to remind yourself that things will get better. Whenever you feel stressed, remind yourself of the progress you’ve made and take a deep breath.

The next time someone says something rude or disrespectful, ask them how they are doing and see what happens. You may find it easier to forgive them for their actions if they seem to be in a bad mood or having a rough day.
